Rap is a genre that has emerged across different countries from all over the world – from the earliest block parties in New York back in 1973 to cyphers held worldwide, even as far as Tokyo, rap has become a way of storytelling and identity within different countries, with each country’s artists showcasing individual talent in their own style.

German rap, or Deutschrap, has been a genre I have been familiar with for a few years now – since building friendships in Germany and learning to speak German, I have been exposed to underground rap records in clubs and basements in Germany from the likes of Haze, Nate57, Disarstar and Waving the Guns (WTG), as well as more mainstream rappers such as Bushido, Sido, Luciano and Gzuz.

In January 2025, I attended a Haze concert in Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, the hometown of the German rapper, which was part of a tour for a new EP called Dirty South, collaborated with a Swiss rapper called MC Hero, hailing from Zürich.

MC Hero introduced me to the world of Swiss rap. Swiss-German bears a different dialect from standard German, which means the Swiss rap scene carries its own unique sound, formed from syllables and rhymes unique to the language in Switzerland.

From recording YouTube freestyles to breaking into Zürich’s rap scene back in 2012, MC Hero represents his city, showcasing lyrical talent through an old school, boom-bap style with gritty lyrics detailing life on Zürich’s streets.

I sat down with MC Hero to discuss his music career, representing Swiss-rap and hip-hop, and breaking the barriers between Germany and Switzerland’s rap scenes with his recent collaborative project with German rapper Haze ‘Dirty South EP’.

HAZY: Was ist dir daran wichtig, ein Rapper aus der Schweiz, besonders auch Zürich, zu sein, und findest du, dass die Rap-Szene da die Aufmerksamkeit bekommt, die sie verdient?

MC HERO: Bruder, ich bin in Zürich aufgewachsen und darum kommt es für mich nicht die Frage ein andere Stadt zu repräsentieren. Ich lebe hier und bin hier geboren.

Ich wünsche dass wir mehr Aufmerksamkeit in unsere Genre bekommen werden aber ich bin einer der ersten Kunstler von der Schweiz einer Deutschland-Schweiz Tour zu spielen. Ich werde bestimmt weiterhin mit Künstler im Ausland konnektieren um unsere Genre breiter zu bringen.

HAZY: Du hast in 2025 mit dem Deutscher Rapper Haze für den EP ‘Dirty South’ kollaboriert. Wie war dieses EP wichtig, um die Deutschrap und Schweizer Rap Szene enger zusammen zu bringen?

Diese EP war sehr sehr wichtig, vorallem um die Grenze ein bisschen zu durchbrechen oder um Türen zu öffnen und weitere Verbindungen zwischen Deutschland und der Schweiz möglich zu machen. Auf jeden Fall haben die Deutschen mitbekommen dass es diese Musik in der Schweiz gibt. Den erstens Schritt habe ich gemacht. Die anderen sollen mitziehen.

HAZY: What is important to you about being a rapper from Switzerland, particularly from Zurich, and do you find that the rap scene there gets the attention it deserves?

MC HERO: Bro, I grew up in Zurich, so it doesn’t come into question to represent any other city - I was born and live here.

I wish that we would receive more attention in our genre, but I’m one of the first Swiss artists to perform a Germany & Switzerland tour. I will definitely continue to connect with other artists abroad in order to bring our genre to a wider audience.

HAZY: In 2025, you collaborated with German rapper Haze for the ‘Dirty South EP’. How was this EP important in bringing the German and Swiss rap scenes closer together?

This EP was very, very important, mainly in breaking down the boundaries between our genres, opening doors and making further connections possible between Germany and Switzerland. The German people have without a doubt noticed that this genre of music exists in Switzerland. I’ve taken the first step - now it’s up to the others to follow suit.

HAZY: Du ziehst Elemente von Boom-bap und Old School Hip Hop durch deine Texte und Sound. Was war deine große musikalischer Einflüsse, als du mit Rap angefangen hast?

MC HERO: Ich bin eher Old School. Ich könnte sehr lange mit diesen New School Musik nicht angefangen, mit diesen Trap. Es geht hauptsächlich um Vibe, nicht nur am Lyrics, nicht nur am Technik und alles. Ich bin dannoch ein bisschen hängen geblieben sagen wir mal darum Old School Boom-bap. Ich bleibe ein bisschen treu aber versuche gerne auch neue Dinge auszuprobieren, nicht weil ich muss oder nicht weil ich von den Jüngeren anweisen anderes zu machen. Eher aus Interesse neues auszuprobieren.

HAZY: You demonstrate elements of Bombay and Old School Hip Hop through your lyrics and sound. What was your biggest musical influence since you started rapping?

MC HERO: I’m rather Old School. For a long time, I couldn’t get behind this New School and Trap music. It’s only about the vibe it has, not the lyrics, the technique or anything. I stayed out of this, because of Old School Boombap.

I stay true but am also open to trying new things, not because I have to or because the younger generation tell me to. It rather comes from an interest to just try new things.

HAZY: Wie zielst du deine Stadt oder Land durch deine Musik zu repräsentieren?

MC HERO: Ich habe nicht mal ein Konkreten Plan, obwohl ich sage, eh, ich mache das so und so, ich bin einfach ich und mache mein Shit. Ich bin in meinen Leben present auf der Straße also alle kennen mich hier und der Support kommt dadurch dass ich wirklich von hier bin und ich mich nicht verstecken. Ich mache meine Sache immer nur gleich vor 10 Jahren und ich glaube das schätzen die Leute sehr an mir.

HAZY: Was können Leute von MC Hero in 2026 erwarten - ob Projekte, Kollaborationen usw?

MC HERO: Ah Bruder, ich sag dir 2026 starten wir mit einen fetten Album von mir und ein fettes Überrachungsgast geben, wieder aus im Ausland - aber ich will mich nicht verraten.

HAZY: How do you aim to represent your city or country through your music?

MC HERO: I don’t have a specific way of doing so. I’m just who I am and do my shit. I’m always around on the street and in my neighbourhood, so everyone knows me here, and the support comes from the fact that I’m a real local and don’t hide away. I’ve always done things the same way I did 10 years ago and I think people really appreciate that about me.

HAZY: What can people expect from MC Hero in 2026, whether this is through projects, collaborations etc?

MC HERO: Ah bro, I’m telling you, in 2026 we’re dropping a killer album of mine and a killer surprise guest, again from abroad - but I don’t want to give everything away.
